It’s week 3 of the Fall 2021 One Room Challenge and today I’m getting you up to date on everything that’s happened in the last few weeks. If you missed any of my previous posts be sure to check them out.

Here’s the GOOD that happened this past week

Tile Demolition

The first DIY I ever completed in this home was installing long subway tile in my kitchen. Now, 4.5 years, I’ve later I ripped it all out. It was bittersweet tearing out a project that I was so proud of but I’m excited to upgrade this backsplash in a few weeks to the Riad tile from The Tile Shop.

Cabinet Box Removal

My goal for this space is to open up the room a little bit. To do that, I removed one of the upper cabinet boxes that will ultimately be replaced with three open shelves.

Cabinet Box Build

I’ve never loved the fact that my cabinets have a 12 inch gap below the ceiling so I’m taking on the challenge of building a second level of cabinet boxes that will bring the uppers all the way to the ceiling. I’ve gotten 3 of my four boxes built so far!

Let’s talk about the BAD

Flooring

Last week I fully planned on pulling up the wood flooring in my kitchen (that also extends to my entryway and bathroom) and when I attempted to pull up the floors I realized that they were glued to the plywood subfloor and not nailed. That really was unexpected — an unexpected issue that will take me additional time to resolve, but also an unexpected expense. The first quote I received to have the flooring removed came in at $2,500. Thankfully I got a second quote that seems much more reasonable to me, $1,250 plus a small additional cost to repair any issues, if any, in the subfloor. As much as I want to save the money and do it myself, I’ve decided to hire out for this step and I’m honestly looking forward to having some time to rest my body from all the work I’ve been putting it through.

What to expect by week 4!

Cabinet Boxes, Face Frames, and Cabinet Doors

This week I’m focusing my efforts on finishing up the upper cabinet boxes. I still need to rebuild the final cabinet box, add the face frames, and fill in any gaps and open areas leftover from the cabinet I removed.

If I can get all of my upper cabinet boxes sanded and primed, that’s a bonus!

I also feel as if I’m falling very behind with my cabinet doors so If i can get a few more of those put together I’ll feel much more comfortable with where I am with the kitchen progress.

Lighting

My electrician is scheduled to come out to install new Kichler lighting and rewire some of the exsisting electrical to new areas. I’ll be adding in a gorgeous sconce above the sink and will also add in matching pendants. I plan to replace the two recessed lights above my kitchen table with a single black chandelier.

  1. Looking good so far! Good idea hiring out the flooring, it will hopefully be much quicker 🙂
