One Room Challenge: Week 1 – Say Hello to My Room!

Today is the official start to the Fall 2021 One Room Challenge and I’m excited to finally share the space I’ll be transforming as a featured designer. I’ll also go into some details about how I begin the design process for a space and where I’m drawing my inspiration from.

Before I share the space, I want to give you a little history of how we ended up purchasing our current home. We were in the market for a home at the beginning of 2017 and the housing market in Smyrna, GA was HOT. Houses were flying off the market. Homes were going up for sale and going under contract the same day. After losing out on an offer for a home we put an offer on our current home, sight unseen. The house was listed around 8 AM and we had an offer in (multiple thousands of dollars above asking price) before lunch time. We didn’t even see the house until hours after we had an offer in. Obviously we ended up getting the house but there was one room in the house that I wanted to renovate from the moment I laid eyes on it, and it was the… Kitchen.

I’ve been dreaming of transforming the Kitchen for 4.5 years and I think it’s time! So I’m happy to share that the room I’ll be transforming for the fall 2021 One Room Challenge is the KITCHEN!

Current Room

Our home was completed in 2003 and there’s a lot in the kitchen that’s original to the house including the cabinets, flooring, lighting, and some of the appliances. The previous homeowner replaced the cooktop, tile, counters, sink, and cabinet hardware. Since moving in we’ve re-tiled, and replaced the dishwasher and refrigerator.

Design Process

Inspiration

The first step in my design process is seeking out inspiration. I’m in the process of really transofrming the style of my house and I know that the direction of my home will be shaped by my kitchen since its central to our living spaces.

I combed through photos and videos of kitchens to pull inspiration from. Some things that really stood out to me were soapstone counters, green cabinets, gold hardware, natural colored floors, and square tiles. I used those pieces of inspiration as a jumping off place for my own designs.

Brainstorming

After finding inspiration the next step in my design process is brainstorming the project. I do my best to evaluate a variety of fixtures, paint, hardware, fabric, and other materials. I think through the layout of a room, and the emotions I want someone to feel when they walk into the space.

I want my kitchen to give anyone who steps into the room the following feelings:

  • Warmth
  • Coziness
  • Comfort
  • Relaxation
  • Safety
  • Happiness

Moodboard

Once I determine the look and feel I want I create a moodboard. They typically start off very simple (like the photo listed below) and change and evolve into something much more beautiful over time. The purpose of the mood board for me is to visualize how pieces go together and to make sure there’s cohesion.

My design and moodboard has changed quite a bit since this one and I can’t wait to show you my full mood board and materials more in depth next week.

To Do List

This kitchen project will be jam packed with hands on decorating, designing, and DIYs. Some of the upgrades include:

  • Extending the upper cabinet height to the ceiling
  • Building new cabinet doors and drawers
  • Adding in open shelving
  • Replacing the window treatments
  • Replacing the flooring
  • Adding in additional lighting
  • Replacing tile backplash and countertops
  • Wallpapering some of the space
